Abstract

Coastal erosion is a natural and continual process that has contributed to the formation of current coastlines worldwide. However, today this process is intensified due to global climate change. The rising sea level has been regarded as the greatest threat to coastal human settlements. The Biobío Region is characterized by a high concentration of population and economic activities along the coastal area. The regional coast, due to its geographical location, it is constantly exposed to erosive processes which must be addressed with structural and nonstructural measures. From the characterization of the Biobío Region’s geographic coastals accidents, the purpose of the present article is to show the need to establish preventive public policies for adaptation to erosion and climate change.
