FIBRAS POLIMÉRICAS DE ALTA RESISTENCIA, UTILIZADAS EN LA FABRICACIÓN DE CASCOS Y CHALECOS DE PROTECCIÓN BALÍSTICA
Abstract
This article consists of a bibliographical review whose purpose is to present basic aspects, in terms of molecular structure and properties, of high-resistance polymeric fibers, founded on para-aramid (such as Kevlar®) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Those fibers are used in the manufacture of personal ballistic protection elements, particularly helmets and vests; the said applications will be covered in a next article. The developments made by the US Army regarding these elements of protection have been adopted as a reference. The information presented is closely related to fibers incorporated into helmets and vests in use, or in potential use, by the Chilean Army. It should be noted that, at institutional requirement, the Institute for Research and Control (IDIC), through its Ballistic Resistance Laboratory, performs the quality control of
