Abstract

This article consists of a bibliographical review whose purpose is to present basic aspects, in terms of molecular structure and properties, of high-resistance polymeric fibers, founded on para-aramid (such as Kevlar®) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Those fibers are used in the manufacture of personal ballistic protection elements, particularly helmets and vests; the said applications will be covered in a next article. The developments made by the US Army regarding these elements of protection have been adopted as a reference. The information presented is closely related to fibers incorporated into helmets and vests in use, or in potential use, by the Chilean Army.
